The Hines Report

Every year, Ron Hines establishes traps at locations in the central and southern part of Illinois to monitor flights of several species of adult moths and beetles during the spring and summer months. He uses specific pheromones to capture specific insects in different types of traps. By monitoring the flights of these species and recording the dates and densities of captures, we can predict other biological activities (e.g., egg laying, occurrence of larval stages, occurrence of injury). This information can be used to schedule scouting and/or management activities.

Ron's comments on this week's traps

Ron establishes traps early in the spring at the following locations:

• Franklin County, near West Frankfort, IL
• Marion County, near Odin, IL
• Pulaski County, near no-till upland cornfield near Ullin, IL
• Sangamon County, Lincoln Land Community College, Springfield, IL
• St. Clair County, SIU-Belleville Research Center near Belleville, IL

He uses the following types of traps to capture adults of the following species:

• Universal Moth Trap for armyworm (AW), Pseudaletia unipuncta
• Delta-Wing Trap for black cutworm (BCW), Agrotis ipsilon
• Heliothis cone trap for corn earworm (CEW), Helicoverpa zea
• Heliothis cone trap (with the "Iowa" lure) for European corn borer (ECB), Ostrinia nubilalis
• Universal Moth Trap for fall armyworm (FAW), Spodoptera frugiperda
• Universal Moth Trap for southwestern corn borer (SWCB), Diatraea grandiosella

The black cutworm traps are checked daily. All other traps are checked twice per week. Lures are changed every two weeks. The numbers of moths and beetles captured at each site for a one-week period are recorded in tables. The manufacturers of the specific lures are indicated in the column headings of the tables.
